Chapter 8: Weiss and the Meeting

“Alright! Finished running!”

“Hehe, Weiss-sama, you’ve really built up your stamina.”

“Yeah, well, I’ve been exercising properly for a week, and, um… Rosalia, you have been making nutritious meals for me…”

“Weiss-sama… please don’t worry about it. I am your personal maid, after all. It’s only natural!!”

When I expressed my gratitude honestly, Rosalia smiled happily. According to what Meg told me, after Weiss became the lord, she had been cooking food for Weiss, who hardly ate. It seems that she had been doing various things, such as preparing his favorite dishes and making things that were easy to eat.

She’s really loyal to Weiss… Judging from the reactions of the other maids, you wouldn’t normally build this level of trust. I should try to subtly ask them what happened between them when I get the chance.

“Still, it’s really hard to recognize Weiss-sama lately. You’ve been doing your work properly, and the other servants have a better opinion of you now. Meg, in particular, has been telling everyone about how much you’ve changed.”

“I see… that’s good… but, you seem really happy about it for some reason.”

“Of course! Because Weiss-sama, you are truly a wonderful person… you just became a little troubled because of some shocking events, but everyone kept complaining, and it was frustrating!”

She said so, getting angry as if it were her own problem. While I was amused by Rosalia, I felt a slight pain in my chest.

Is it okay to keep quiet about the fact that she trusts Weiss, not me?

I quickly changed the subject to hide my fleeting thoughts.

“Well then, I’d like to practice some magic, is that okay?”

“Yes, thank you for your hard work with the basic training this past week. I think you’ve gotten quite smooth at releasing your magic power. Now, let’s practice control. Try hitting that tree over there ten times with Shadow Arm. You won’t hit it if you don’t control it properly. It might not go well at first, but you should be able to do it if you concentrate.”

She pointed to a tree in the courtyard. Until now, I had been training to release shadows and enhance their power, but it seems I’m finally moving on to the next stage.

However, I had a question.

“Is it really that simple?”

Because this… seems much easier than retrieving documents, which I do all the time. Or does she have some other intention?

“People not used to magic might think it’s easy, but controlling it and forming an image is very difficult. Wait, what? You can do it so easily!! Normally, even getting this far in a month would be impressive!!”

When I started hitting the tree with shadow magic during her explanation, Rosalia raised her voice in surprise. Well, I knew from game knowledge that it was important to repeat the process, so I practiced almost all day this week while recovering magic power with potions…

And I could control it quite well from the first day, so maybe Weiss had a talent for dark magic. It was something I hadn’t realized in the game since he died early on…

“By the way, I can do this too.”

“What? How can you do so much with just basic training? Your control is amazing! At this rate, there’s not much left for me to teach you…”

When I divided the shadow hand into three and started juggling with stones, she looked at me with disbelief. Her reaction made me feel good, and having Weiss praised made me genuinely happy. It’s like having your favorite character complimented!

If control and imagery are crucial for magic, I might be able to use a bit of a cheat…

“Ha ha ha, that’s right. Weiss is amazing!! I’m glad you understand!!”

“Like Phyllis-sama, it seems Weiss-sama is also a genius…”

Phyllis… My heart ached for a moment. She’s a main character, unlike Weiss who’s more of a stepping stone. She’s a potential heroine for the protagonist and Weiss’s adoptive sister.

She should be attending the magic academy in the royal capital right now. In the game’s scenario, Weiss and her relationship is not good, so I don’t want to get involved with her until I have a stronger footing.

“Excuse me. Then… shall we move on to actual combat training since the basic training seems to be sufficient?”

Rosalia changed the subject, perhaps reading something from my expression.

“Really? Sounds exciting. What does practical training involve?”

“Well… try to take this from me. Ice!”

“Huh?”

I could only reply with a dumb look on my face to Rosalia’s words as she held an ice spear made of magic in front of me with her usual gentle smile.

“Ugh… that was scary…”

“I’m sorry, I did stop right before hitting you… But, I couldn’t afford to hold back midway…”

Rosalia follows me with a wry smile as I am half crying after receiving a one-sided attack in the name of magic practice.

I, who lived in Japan, a world free of conflict, was terrified just seeing an ice spear swung at me. All my shadow hands were deflected, and my sword didn’t even come close… But if her words weren’t just flattery, it seems I wasn’t completely ineffective.

“Come to think of it, in the past, when I didn’t like something, I used to hit you, but you could easily avoid it if you wanted to, right?”

“It’s alright. I deflected them quickly, so I barely took any damage… And being hit by you, Weiss-sama, didn’t bother me. It was more like part of an attack play, of sorts.”

“Wow…”

“And if it cleared your mind Weiss-sama, it was worth it for me.”

Rosalia’s unwavering loyalty is truly impressive. I was inwardly surprised by her almost fanatic dedication as I headed to the conference room.

“I don’t mean to be presumptuous, but even if you’re tired from training, please try not to fall asleep during the meeting. While the staff and those you see daily are beginning to acknowledge your efforts, it’s still just within the mansion.”

“Yeah, thanks for always worrying about me. I’ll rely on your support if anything happens.”

I stood nervously in front of the conference room door. This was a big moment. I took a deep breath and nodded to Rosalia.

“Weiss-sama has arrived.”

As Rosalia opened the door, everyone in the conference room turned their gaze on me. Their eyes are somewhat appraising… a little uncomfortable.

“From the right, the person in charge of finances…”

Rosalia began to introduce who was responsible for what, but my attention was focused on a middle-aged man who looked serious and robust. Our territory had many issues, but the most critical was security. I needed to address that urgently. So, I needed to discuss matters with the person in charge extensively.

The middle-aged man seemed serious, but why had he neglected the worsening security?

“And this is Kaiser-sama, who is in charge of toilet cleaning.”

“What?”

++Wait, the robust guy is in charge of toilet cleaning? Why is someone responsible for that even at this meeting? And more importantly…++

“Where is the person in charge of security!!”

“I believe Barbaro-sama is in the lounge, drinking as usual…”

Kaiser answered my outburst. Why isn’t he here? And Barbaro… seriously? He’s someone Weiss had a bad history with.

I had just finished gathering information on him, but I didn’t know he was in charge of security…

“This is ridiculous!! Why isn’t anyone complaining about this?”

“Well… Weiss-sama, you declared Barbaro-sama to be his proxy, so no one could say anything…”

++It’s Weiss’s fault!++ Internally, I clutched my head in frustration.

“Damn… I’ll go get him. Rosalia, show me where he is.”

“Yes, Weiss-sama.”

And so, I headed towards Barbaro. Just in case, I took a sword with me.
